Dining out vs. entertaining at home

We can all agree that spending quality time with family and friends is priceless. Yet, when it comes to getting together, we often grapple with the age-old poser: Should we head out to a restaurant or a pub for a great meal or stay in and host our family and good friends at home, putting our own culinary skills to the test? Both options have their unique merits, but the decision usually hinges on things like personal preferences, financial considerations, bringing the kids and the desire for uninterrupted quality time.

Save or Splurge?

One of the biggest differences between dining out and entertaining at home is the cost. Eating at restaurants can undoubtedly put a dent in your wallet, especially if it becomes a regular habit. On top of the cost of your meal, dining out often includes drinks, perhaps a Taxi or an Uber to and from, and possibly even a babysitter, which all adds to the cost of a night out.

On the other hand, hosting a shindig at home is generally more cost-effective. You have control over the menu (there’s a lot to be said for the humble barbie), and everyone can bring a plate and contribute to the meal, ensuring delicious food without emptying your pockets.

Uninterrupted Quality Time

While dining out has its allure, and we love the hospitality staff who go the extra mile, it can sometimes disrupt the flow of a meaningful discussion or the enjoyment of shared moments. Whereas when you entertain at home, you have complete control over the pace of the evening. There’s no need for the awkwardness of determining who had the entree and who didn’t when the bill comes around at the end of the evening.

Entertaining at home allows for uninterrupted good times. You can leisurely enjoy dinner, engage in hearty conversations tell a few jokes, and truly relish the company of the people around you. It creates an environment where connections can deepen, and laughter can fill the room.

Set your own schedule.

Planning a night can be a logistical nightmare, especially when everyone leads busy lives. It often means trying to coordinate everyone’s schedules, finding a suitable restaurant, and making reservations well in advance. Hosting get-togethers at home can be much more convenient. You can pick a date and time that suits everyone, and you’re not confined by restaurant hours. You can start early, extend late into the night, or even make it a lunch, brunch, or a brekky affair. It also doesn’t matter if someone arrives late or stays late. After all, isn’t that what you bought the pull-out sofa bed for?

Personal touch and privacy.

One of the most significant advantages of entertaining at home is the personal touch you can add to the event. You can decorate your space to create the perfect ambience, play your favourite music, and imbue the evening with your unique style. Your home reflects your personality, making it a more intimate and personalised setting for your gathering.

Privacy is also a key advantage of entertaining at home. You’re in familiar, comfortable surroundings and your home provides a haven for candid conversations, shared laughter, and growing relationships.

Finding the right balance.

In the age-old debate of dining out versus staying in, the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities. If you’re aiming to save money, enjoy uninterrupted quality time, and set your own pace, entertaining at home is the ideal choice. It offers a more personal and intimate experience that fosters deeper connections. It’s also probably the preferred option if there are kids involved. It’s much easier to keep them entertained at home, where they are comfortable, than at a restaurant or pub

On the other hand, dining out can be a special treat. Apart from being perfect for celebrating milestones or enjoying a change of scenery, it’s an opportunity to indulge in culinary delights and savour the ambience of different eateries and support local businesses. The key is to strike a balance between these two options, combining the joy of dining out with the warmth of hosting at home.

The professional team at McGrath Real Estate are torn. While we all love getting out for a lunch or having dinner in one of Adelaide’s many fabulous restaurants or pubs, there’s also a lot to be said for inviting family, neighbours, or a bunch of friends over for a BBQ, just chilling with drinks and nibbles or even coffee and a bit of cake.
