Getting out before winter sets in
Theres not much time before the colder months are upon us. Fortunately, there is still some excellent autumn weather about and a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the last vestiges of warmth before the winter chill set in.

Adelaide and some regional centres are still offering plenty of outdoor events to entice people and families to enjoy themselves and to stay and play for a day…or even longer.

There are still some fabulous events to get your mouth watering if you love food. Look for food and wine pairing dinners, a few Tasting Australia events, themed dinners, various winery & distillery tastings, Adelaide Food Fringe, Chardonnay May in the Adelaide Hills, and the Clare Valley Gourmet Week, to name just a few.

However, you dont need to find an event just to get out and enjoy the rest of May. Heres a great little list of things weve come up with for you and your family to do over the next couple of weekends…or even during the week if youve got some time to spare.

And what’s even better is theyre all free!

Walks with kids and the dogs along the beach
The water might be getting a little cooler, but that shouldnt stop you from taking a walk along one of Adelaides magnificent beaches. Grab the kids, throw a leash on your furry friend, and explore the coastline, rock pools, sand dunes, and beaches.

Rides along the many bike paths
Before you lock the bikes away for winter, dust them off one last time and ride along one of the many trails and bike paths around Adelaide. There are some stunning rides either near the beach or one of the many trails along side our major creeks.

Bushwalks and hikes
Outdoor lovers will know that some of the local bush walks through our National, Regional and Coastal Parks are stunning at this time of year. Pop on your walking shoes, pack a backpack with a picnic and spend the day at one with nature.

Coffee and outdoor eating
The autumn sunshine is perfect for alfresco dining and coffee with family and friends. Support your local café owners with your favourite brew, snack or lunch and find a spot to soak up the glorious warmth while you indulge.

Visit family and friends
If youve got friends and relatives who are perhaps a distance away, why not plan a May meet up? After all, it could be a few months before the weather is nice enough and you have an opportunity to get together again.

Weekend away for some last-minute camping
If youre not a fan of muddy tents and mouldy canvas, May is probably the best opportunity to get in a few days of camping in some sunny weather. And the best part is the nights are cold enough for a roaring fire. Find a secluded spot and chill out. Just dont forget the marshmallows!

Drop a line at one of the beaches
Theres nothing better than a feed of fresh fish, and Adelaide beaches, jetties and estuaries are just waiting for you and the kids to throw in a line. And if youre not sure what you should fish for, our resident fisho, Glenn, may have a few tips.

Bayside outdoor activities
Holdfast Bay Council has an awesome monthly calendar of events packed with community events, live music, markets, exhibitions, sports, and kidsactivities. Check out some of the exciting events happening during May! https://www.holdfast.sa.gov.au/discover-our-place/whats-on

Last of the autumn BBQs
Although there are some die-hards out there who BBQ all year round, no one really likes standing in the rain to turn a few snags. Right now, the weather is still glorious enough to whack some chops and sausages on the barbie for family and friends.

Make soups and casseroles
Rather than waiting for the cold snap, why not get on top of your winter freezer fare by making some tasty soups and casseroles? Then, all youll need to do is pluck one from the freezer on those cold nights when you dont feel like cooking!

Autumn leaves in the Adelaide Hills
Perhaps the prettiest time to visit the Adelaide Hills is right now. The beautiful autumn colours of reds, yellows, golds, purples and oranges of the trees as they begin to turn is a huge tourist drawcard and a wonderful photo opportunity. Selfie time!

Get the winter veg in
One for the gardeners. Although your winter veg should already be in, the soil temperature is still warm enough to pop in broccoli, cabbage, broad beans, cauliflower, celery, English spinach, silverbeet, lettuce and peas. Herb lovers can plant chives, coriander, marjoram, oregano, mustard and parsley.

If youre looking for even more ideas, especially things to do with the kids, the Play & Go Adelaide website has some terrific activities.

At McGrath Real Estate, we love getting outdoors at every opportunity. Theres still time to soak up a little sunshine, so get out there and enjoy!
